St. Gabriel’s Catholic School embraces diversity as an essential aspect of our identity. At the school’s inception, our founders shared a vision that St. Gabriel’s would welcome a diverse population of students, capable of succeeding in a school of excellence. When students and families from diverse backgrounds join our school community, they add richness and depth to our journey. As we open our minds, hearts, and spirits to others we grow in our understanding of ourselves and one another. In this movement out of our personal experiences, we begin to appreciate the rich and varied gifts present not only in our school community, but also in the larger world outside of St. Gabriel’s.
Diversity at St. Gabriel’s exists in the languages we speak, the colors of our skin, the traditions we observe, the religions we practice, the structure of our families, the financial resources we possess, the special needs we have, and in our gender and our ages. In our recruitment practices for families, faculty, and staff, we strive to create an inclusive school whose membership reflects the rich diversity that is present in Austin and its surrounding counties. As our students approach diversity, we want them to embrace prudence, exhibit temperance, display justice, model fortitude, and seek to be young men and women who hold a deep respect for the dignity of every person. When we approach diversity from our core values and the authenticity of our spiritual center, we break down stereotypes, combat prejudice, diminish intolerance, and replace ignorance and fiction with fact and informed judgment. Being faithful to Catholic teachings, St. Gabriel’s is committed to creating and nurturing a diverse community.
Preparing students to live in this complex and inter-connected global community demands an appreciation and experience of diversity on many levels. While we believe that our differences and our separate histories help define us as individuals, we are committed to making connections and learning about one another. Essential to our students becoming global citizens and leaders in the 21st century is their welcoming of others into their lives. Rooted in Christianity and the richness of the Roman Catholic tradition, St. Gabriel’s welcomes the unique gifts and talents of all who embrace our mission and respect the dignity of every human being.
