• St. Gabriel's Catholic School and St. Michael's Catholic Academy - Better Together

Important Announcement: Together, toward a bright future...

To the students, families and staff of St. Gabriel’s Catholic School and St. Michael’s Catholic Academy,

We write to you today with exciting and uplifting news about the future of our beloved schools.

We are delighted to announce that, effective immediately, St. Michael’s Catholic Academy and St. Gabriel’s Catholic School are solidifying the longstanding connection between our schools and unifying our communities as one.

Today’s announcement marks the completion of a mutual, thoughtful, diligent and prudent discernment process designed to preserve the mission of our schools for generations to come. In coming together, our schools will operate as one single entity, legally known as Archangel Catholic School of Austin, with each school continuing to operate on its current campus and under its current name.
St. Michael’s Catholic Academy and St. Gabriel’s Catholic School have a long history of connectedness and collaboration. As Independent Catholic schools, our missions and values have always been closely aligned. Our centeredness in Christ and our commitments to an enriching and meaningful Catholic education, too, are both aligned and deeply held. Our campuses are neighboring, and our schools already serve many of the same families. Such a partnership is natural, mutually beneficial and – to many in our communities – long overdue!

The Right Fit at the Right Time
We are keenly aware of today’s competitive and challenging environment for independent schools locally in the Austin market, across Texas and nationally. The unification of our schools will solidify our position as an excellent, competitive and accessible independent Catholic school. This unification will allow us to use our combined financial resources to fund new initiatives and programs, to continue to improve our facilities and create an overall culture of generational stewardship. This unification will allow our students to explore and excel in their interests not only in the classroom but also throughout our extracurricular activities. We are excited for the many opportunities this partnership will provide for students for generations to come.

Blending Our Extraordinary Leadership, Administrators, Faculty and Staff
Our schools will be governed by a blended Board of Trustees comprising equal representation from both schools. Christopher Dolce, current St. Michael’s Board Chair, will Chair our combined Board, while Ron Zboril, current St. Gabriel’s Board Chair, will serve as Vice Chair.

Our joint Board of Trustees is delighted to appoint Colleen Lynch, current Head of St. Gabriel’s, to serve as Head of School in the new PK3-12 entity; Heidi Sloan, the current Head of St. Michael’s, will serve as the Head of the High School. Together, these talented leaders will guide our integration in a spirit of collaboration and with an eye toward the smoothest possible transition for our students, families and colleagues. To that end, our talented, dedicated faculty and staff automatically will become employees of the new entity.

Shared Values, Unique Identities
While our joining-together highlights all our schools have in common, we celebrate the unique history and individual characteristics of both St. Michael’s and St. Gabriel’s. In merging our schools, we are both preserving and unifying distinct cultures, traditions, and alumni populations. We will continue to honor what makes each school exceptional. We are proud of our traditions, and we look forward to building new ones together.

A More Natural and Integrated High School Transition
Throughout our histories, many St. Gabriel’s families have chosen St. Michael’s for their high school education. This is a foundational demonstration of our alignment and our like-mindedness. In joining together, St. Gabriel’s students who participate in early admission will be guaranteed admission to St. Michael’s. At the same time, St. Michael’s will continue to welcome and embrace students from our valued partner schools from across the city and our Diocese, just as we always have.
What’s Next?
Colleen and Heidi are leading a team collaboration to solidify an Integration Plan that will direct our work in the coming weeks and months. We promise to keep you informed as this unification continues to take shape for our students, families, staff, faculty and community members.

We are excited to share this news with your children. On Monday, we will be meeting with the students to describe – in an age-appropriate way – how our schools are becoming better together, and how, for them, this transition will be a seamless one.

In the coming weeks, we will be hosting a series of meetings, organized by class, during which we will walk you through precisely what our merger means for you. In the meantime, we understand you will likely have questions about this change. While we may not yet have all the answers, we welcome you to reach out to any of us or reply to this email.

We are grateful for your support, understanding and trust in our schools. We ask for your continued prayers and for the intercession of our patron saints.  May St. Gabriel continue to inspire us in announcing the good news, and may St. Michael protect us as we go forward into our bright and unified future.
