STEAM Makerspace

St. Gabriel’s prek-8 students are bringing ideas to life in the d.lab for Making, a creative, collaborative work space for making, learning and sharing. It’s both here and in the classroom that our Makerspace director has implemented STEAM by Design that thoughtfully integrates design thinking and the groundbreaking research from Harvard’s Project Zero to leverage the powerful ideas and tools of the Maker Movement.
  • Making is known as STEAM, the interplay of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math and is a mix of engineering oriented concepts—electronics, digital fabrication and computer programming—blended with traditional skills such as carpentry and metalworking;
  • One of the chief goals of Making is to empower students with the mindset and skills necessary to shape and influence the world around them. To develop this, students practice Design Thinking that draws up creativity, logic, collaboration and empathy to create meaningful solutions for real-world problems;
  • The d.lab for Making is the first makerspace of its kind in Central Texas to serve Pre K through eighth grade students. It’s a collaborative learning environment that brings together people, ideas and tools to foster a sense of community through creation. This “fab lab” is home to basic hand and power tools, laser cutters and 3D printers for use by the school community.
We believe Making challenges the imaginations of our students, builds confidence and creativity, and teaches an important lesson about accepting failure…as long as they keep trying. We know if our students can imagine it, they can make it in the d.lab for Making!
