Each January, St. Michael’s Prep students extend their learning beyond the classroom and engage in three transformative weeks of discovery, challenge, and growth. Winter Term is a signature program where students immerse themselves in a topic, subject area or cultural experience beyond the traditional curriculum, empowering them to dive deep into professional local and international internships, pursue passions through innovative mini-courses, or expand their horizons through global travel.
From exploring a career in architecture with a hands-on internship, to studying the history of naval warfare or experimenting with culinary arts in a mini-course, to walking the streets of Ireland and hearing history and faith come alive through poetry and landscape, Winter Term opens doors to new perspectives.
“I loved Japan,” William R., St. Michael’s Prep Class of 2026 said. “Everything about it, from the culture so different than our own, to the food, to all the amazing experiences, particularly the science and technology museum, was awesome. It has shown me an entire way of life I knew nothing about, one that is detail-oriented and ergonomic while setting global standards in technology, safety, and more."
This January, St. Michael’s Prep Winter Term students will travel to:
However, travel is only one part of the story. Last year, for example, more than 100 students completed internships locally, as well as internationally, gaining real-world experience in law firms, hospitals, architecture firms, and more. Others enroll in exploratory, hands-on mini-courses designed to spark passions—from film studies and modern band performance to leadership and outdoor adventure.
The heart of Winter Term is exploration—of the world, of ideas, and of self. Whether interning to pursue a potential career, exploring a passion project, or traveling abroad, every Warrior develops new skills, builds meaningful relationships, and returns with a broader vision for what’s possible.
