Welcome from James Melone, Head of Middle School
At St. Gabriel’s Middle School in Austin TX, students embark on a journey of discovery, growth and change. We set high expectations because we believe in our students and their ability to succeed. Our goal is to help them grow not just as academic students, but as global citizens, independent thinkers and responsible members of their communities.
What makes St. Gabriel’s Catholic Middle School shine? We believe it comes from our entire staff and their true concern for every child. Teachers infuse energy into each day and try to make learning fun. We offer “structured independence” where students have freedom, rights and responsibilities to struggle and overcome challenges in a caring, nurturing and loving environment. Students are allowed to experience failure and frustration, so they can learn to overcome those same frustrations to become independent, adaptable thinkers.
Middle School challenges students’ critical thinking and problem solving skills, which reside as the core focus of content area classes. Students learn to communicate effectively, both orally and in the written word. Middle School curriculum revolves around six core classes: math, science, religion (covers the Catholic faith and its application to the students’ lives), language arts, social studies (with a heavy focus on geography), and foreign language (Mandarin, Latin or Spanish). We offer leveled and accelerated opportunities in math and language arts.
In addition to daily core classes, students are given the option among a multitude of rotating electives, including art, 3-D design, guitar, chorus, physical education, drama, photography and yearbook. All fifth and sixth graders take an introductory study skills class, which reviews strategies for time management and personal organization. We offer a thriving after-school curriculum of athletics, clubs and community services to keep students engaged long after the school day ends.
We provide opportunities for appropriate social and relationship development through extracurricular activities, all under the watchful eyes of teacher chaperones. Whether our students are relaxing in gathering spaces around campus or celebrating at school dances or spirit nights, they are learning the value of friendship and camaraderie.
Throughout the journey of academic development, each student is encouraged to show initiative, take personal responsibility for learning, manage time wisely, and find a voice in writing. Along that journey, we constantly strive to strengthen the collaboration between students, teachers and parents.
By the time students leave St. Gabriel’s Middle School in Austin to pursue their dreams in the high school academic setting, we hope they discover their true passions. We hope they recognize and capitalize on their strengths and fulfill their shortcomings in order to become better people than they were yesterday. As they leave, we wish them much success and tell them they will always have a home here at St. Gabriel’s.
